Book Review: Rembrandt's Jews by Steven Nadler Rembrandt's Jews () Steven Nadler. This book is largely a portrait of Amsterdam's Jewish community in the 's and, to a far lesser extent, today. Steven Nadler, a professor of philosophy, has come to his subject primarily through a deep interest in the life and writings of Baruch Spinoza.   He is the author, most recently of Spinoza: A Life (winner of the Koret Book Award for Biography) and Spinoza's Heresy: Immortality and the Jewish Mind. Rembrandt's Jews was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. Rembrandt's Jews by Steven Nadler (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, ).

"") But, though Weiss tries to depict R.v.R. as first and foremost a man of intellectual independence (""Three heretics: Rembrandt, Spinoza, Jesus""), the man who matters--the painter--is hardly captured in stray references to chiaroscuro or such lines as ""Then I turned to my brush and to my beloved yellow.   Rembrandt and Spinoza walk into a bar. Spinoza. "It is a curious coincidence that in the same month, July i, when the condemnation of Spinoza was being read in the Synagogue, Rembrandt went through the ordeal of declaring himself insolvent" (p. 26). "In the decade in which Spinoza's Ethics and his Tractatus were published, Rembrandt produced his late and great masterpieces" (p. 27).   Later in life Spinoza wrote The Ethics, a book that laid out his philosophy in a highly precise manner. The book is composed of five parts. Rembrandt van .

Mr. Valentiner’s most interesting essay on Rembrandt and Spinoza describes how these two men, whom he believes must surely have met, both had to fight the State Church in their different ways. 1 In the month that Rembrandt was declared bankrupt, Spinoza, then a student, was excommunicated for his views by the rabbis of his synagogue.

Later, the Calvinist Church Council at the Hague issued a condemnation of Spinoza. Herbert H. Rowen, "Rembrandt and Balet," The Journal of Modern Hist no. 2 (Jun., ): He is the author, most recently, of Spinoza: A Life, which won the Koret Jewish Book Award for biography, and Spinoza's Heresy: Immortality and the Jewish Mind.

His books include Rembrandt's Jews, which was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize; Spinoza: A Life, which won the Koret Jewish Book Award; and A Book Forged in Hell: Spinoza's Scandalous Treatise and the Birth of the Secular Age (Princeton)/5(10).

Michael Dean makes low farce out of the lives of Spinoza and Rembrandt in this loosely historical novel. Dean imagines that the young philosopher and the much older painter, who actually lived around the corner from one another, met and became friends, finding common cause amid their persecution and mistreatment by prominent figures in Amsterdam/5(6).

There is a possibility that the two may have met at the home of Manasseh ben Israel, who was one of Spinoza's teachers, or at the home of Spinoza's Latin teacher, Dr. Frans van den Emden, where one of Rembrandt's pupils was a lodger, or at meetings of Collegiants and Mennonites which the philosopher occasionally attended.
